Best Drama is mostly a race between two films, the obvious choice American Beauty and the surprise option, The Insider. American Beauty is my #1 of the year and it will also be the Golden Globe Winner. Missed nominations: the amazing Magnolia and Three Kings

Best Actress- Drama- Annette Bening was brilliant as Kevin Spacey's controlling wife in American Beauty. Hilary Swank will win due to rave reviews and winning almost every critic's society award for Best Actress. She was great as Teena Brandon, a girl who hides her sexuality and pretends to be a man. Bening is just better. Julianne Moore was the only good part of The End of the Affair. She put in at least two good roles in that movie and Magnolia. I missed her performance in Ideal Husband. I can not speak about Sigourney Weaver's performance because I didn't see it. Undeserved Nomination: Meryl Streep, no reason for this. So bad.

Best Actor- Drama- Denzel Washington puts in possibly the best performance of his career but it's not enough to beat Kevin Spacey's brilliant performance in American Beauty. The rest of the nominees have a decent chance but I'm fairly confident Spacey will take it. I did enjoy Matt Damon immensely as the maniac Tom Ripley. I did not see Richard Farnsworth in The Straight Story. Missed Nominations: George Clooney in Three Kings. Brad Pitt or Edward Norton in Fight Club.

Best Musical or Comedy- Analyze This, Notting Hill, and Toy Story 2 are throw away nominations that have no chance in the Oscars. That leaves Being John Malkovich, and Man on the Moon. I did not like Man on the Moon that much, I loved Malkovich.

Best Actress in a Comedy or Musical- The weakest nominees in the awards. I really disliked Election but from this list, Reese Witherspoon the only one whose performance remotely resembled acting.  I did not see Tumbleweeds, I have barely heard of it besides Janet McTeer's performance. I heard she's good so I think she'll win.

Best Actor in a Comedy or Musical- Although I have not seen Ideal Husband or Sweet and Lowdown, I feel confident in saying that Jim Carrey gave the best performance out of these nominees. His Andy Kaufman was just so brilliant and mesmerizing that they must give him the award for the second year in a row. He won last year for The Truman Show. Robert DeNiro was funny in Analyze This but he wasn't Jim Carrey. Missed Nominations: John Cusack or John Malkovich for Being John Malkovich.

Best Foreign Film- I don't see too many foreign films. Out of these I only saw one, The Red Violin., which was brilliant. It did not feel like a foreign film because it was Candaian and mostly in English. I am seeing All About My Mother later this week. All About My Mother should win. I heard it was nominated for 15 awards in what is equivalent to the Oscars of Spain.  Missed Nominations: Two of my favorite movies this year are considered foreign films. Run Lola Run and Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels were amazing films and they, especially Lola, was robbed.

Best Supporting Actress- Cameron Diaz and Catherine Keener were equally good in very different roles in Being John Malkovich. They will cancel each other out. Chloe Sevigny was ehh at best in Boys Don't Cry. That leaves Angelina Jolie and her amazing performance in the pitiful Girl, Interrupted to take the trophy home. Missed Nomination: If you're going to nominate Julianne Moore for her two other performances this year why not nominate her for her best performance of the year as well in Magnolia.

Best Supporting Actor:  Micheal Caine won last year for Little Voice and wasn't even nominated for the Oscar, this year he puts in a vey good turn as Tobey Maguire's mentor in The Cider House Rules. Haley Joel Osment puts in a performance of a lifetime as the kid who took the USA by storm by seeing dead people. Jude Law was excellent as the man who Tom Ripley wants to be in The Talented Mr. Ripley. All 5 of these nominees could win this trophy. If I had a vote, I'd pick Tom Cruise's amazing turn as a seduction-infomercial host. I think they'll reward Michael Duncan Clarke for being the only nomination out of a slew of actors who could have got the nod in The Green Mile. Missed Nomination: Phillip Seymour Hoffman for Magnolia or The Talented Mr. Ripley. Or maybe Phillip Baker Hall or John C. Reilly  for Magnolia. Let's not forget Chris Cooper or Wes Bentley in American Beauty.

Best Director- All these Directors did a great job in their respective movie but Sam Mendes did the best job hands down. Missed Nominations: Spike Jonze for Being John Malkovich or Tom Dwyer for Run Lola Run.

Best Screenplay- This is aso a tough one. All of these films had great scripts. American Beauty, Being John Malkovich, and Sixth Sense would be my top 3. It's really hard to choose. But I've got to choose so I'll take Malkovich as my favorite and to win the trophy.

The Rest of the Awards: The Sopranos, The Sopranos, The Sopranos. it is a groundbreaking and amazing show. It should be nominated for comedy too then it could take very award available. No X- Files nominations makes me sad.
