What has America come to? From Andy Griffith to Two Guys a
Girl and a Pizza Place. From Gone With The Wind to American Pie. Think
about those comparisons and you will consider that this is a complete bull intro which it
is but doesn't it make you think.
American Pie is basically about 4 high school seniors who
make a pact to lose their virginity by prom. What ensues of course is the actions of four
sex crazed lunatics. One already has a girlfriend, one goes the sensitive route, one goes
through the play it cool route, and one has no idea what to do.
The movie features some you have to see it to understand jokes like
MILF or Stifler's mom (youll know what Im talking about after you see it). It
also has some blatantly obvious jokes like a young male experimenting his sexuality with a
pastry and a guy mistakenly drinking a male body fluid mixed with an alcoholic beverage.
The film uses sexual talk, actions, and gross-out jokes to keep the
crowd interested and laughing. The plot is not totally original but the way it comes out
is in a fashion I would have never imagined.
The setting is East Great Falls High. All the usual student
stereotypes are involved like jocks, dorks, band members and all other cliques that are in
high school. In last year's much softer Can't Hardly Wait, the whole movie was a
party. This movie only had certain parts that were parties but those certain parts blew Can't
Hardly Wait out of the water.
American Pie has a distinct taste from all other teenager
movies. The characters are not afraid of any repercussions. They go all the way overboard.
The filmmakers stopped at nothing for a laugh. Whether it is using foreigners for a laugh
or making a parental figure talk about sex with his son.
When I left American Pie, I was definitely satisfied. I got my
raunchy comedy. Some great comedic lines. Some just all out funny scenes and some tender
moments which were probably the weak points in the movie, like most high school movies. As
for the high school movie debate, which one is the best this year. She's All That,
and Varsity Blues don't even touch American Pie in my book. Cruel
Intentions is closer them to American. But the only one that is up there which is
officially from last year is Rushmore.
The performance by Jason Biggs as Jim was a definite standout,
especially since he had to do some pretty weird stuff for his role. He humped a pie and
did a strip tease. Eugene Levy is a great comedic actor and was very good as Jim's Dad.
Stifler (Seann William Scott) was awesome as the ultimate a-hole/jock. Every time he came
on screen he said something totally unexpected. Chris Klein played the same kind of role
in this movie as he did in Election. I didn't particularly like that movie but he's
definitely talented. Natasha Lyonne and Shannon Elizabeth both gave good performances.
American Pie is not as all out funny as There's Something
about Mary but it is the best comedy I've seen this year.
