Joe's Preview Review:
Eddie Murphy has returned to make a sequel, more
money, and do more obese characters in this year's most overly hyped film. I've
been seeing previews forever for this film. They look disgusting, and I think
I've already seen too much. Plus Eddie Murphy as 5 characters, I couldn't even
take Martin Lawrence as 2 in Big Momma's House. This movie looks like a stinker.
Joe's Review:
A
surprisingly good film that showcases Eddie Murphy's many talents. Thinking back
to The Nutty Professor, not the original with Jerry Lewis but the first
Eddie Murphy installment, I remember a funny movie with Eddie Murphy that enjoyed
watching. After seeing it's box office tally, I knew the next step was sequel. I
thought as long as Eddie Murphy was involved it could never get too low. That is
the inside secret of The Nutty Professor, without Eddie Murphy, the film
is a waste but he's in the movie so we don't really have to think about it.
Nutty Professor 2: The Klumps
is a film that derives every bit of comedy that could be gotten out of Eddie
Murphy and the whole Klump family. Murphy excels especially in his roles
as Grandma and Papa Klump. These two alone could have their own movie. The
sexually active Grandma and the sexually deficient Papa are brilliant and
hysterical.
There are two supporting performances
worth mentioning, but Murphy makes the movie. Larry Miller reprises his role as
the dickhead, Sherman's boss Dean Richmond at Wellman College. He has a funny
scene involving a giant hamster; one of the film's best scenes. The other
supporting character is the film's love interest in the luscious form of pop
diva Janet Jackson as a fellow professor at the college. The best thing I can
say about her performance is she didn't make the film worse but she didn't
improve it much. She did add a bit of beauty to an otherwise ugly cast full of
fat Eddie Murphys.
The movie's premise is about fart
jokes and fat jokes so don't expect any real substance here. Yeah, fine... they make
the point that it's on the inside which counts, which we all know is bull.
This is the most consistently funny comedy of the summer. Me, Myself, and
Irene had a few chuckles but it had an awful lot of dry spells. I was
laughing all through the movie. That's what I expect from a good comedy, that's
what I got. One of the only decent films of the summer.
